Demographic analysis:

Two-child families still the ideal

Starting a family is important for today's young adults. Most women and men state that they want to have children in the future. The majority want to have two children. Compared to earlier measurements there does not seem to be a weakening in the desire to have children at all.

Statistics Sweden will publish the "Having children or not" report today? The results are based on a questionnaire survey aimed at 7 000 women and men in childbearing years.

On average Swedish women have two children and the two child norm appears to be a lasting one. Roughly half of the women and men without children who were asked how many children they would like to have replied that they would like to have two. Among those with one child, most believe that they will have another, while the majority of those with two do not believethat they will have more.

Want to do something else first

Historically there have been few children born in Sweden under difficult economic times. Despite the question about the desire to have children being answered during a recession, economic reasons are not the most common reasons given for why people wait to start families. The reason why people waitis mainly that they want to do something else first or that they did not feel sufficiently mature.  This applies to both younger and older people without children. Among singles aged 35 however the main reason is that they have not found the right partner.

Problems getting pregnant

Many women and men over 35 and without children state that they tried to get pregnant but did not succeed. For those who had children who are  aged 30 or more, more than one third that needed to wait more than a year before they themselves or their partners became pregnant.
